vivian maier

Ok, so I keep finding, or rather being made aware of by others (usually my darling mum) all these amazing, often unknown, photographers. So today, be inspired by:

Vivian Maier

One day, John Maloof bought a box of 200 negatives at an auction, hoping they were vintage photos of his neighborhood. Instead, they were Vivian Maier's. He tracked down all her other photos, and most of her belongings, and set about scanning them and learning more about her.

She made her living as a nanny, first in New York, then in Chicago. She never showed anyone her photos other than the children she nannied. She was a reserved person, and lived life on her own terms.

She died recently, at age 83.

Her photos are now becoming more and more public, with exhibitions in Scandinavia, London, and New York coming soon or happening now.

Her photos are filled with humanity and warmth. It is surprising to hear of her reserved nature, when so many of her subject seem to have made such a connection with her.

All photos by Vivian Maier/John Maloof Collection. Photos, facts, and most opinions found here.
