the highest kite

Charlotte Bronte! Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books in the world. The movie comes out in less than two weeks, and I am dying of excitement.

Pluses: warm light, sharp contrast and interesting focus

mirth and jollity

This is from yesterday:) I might possibly have stayed up late watching the Oscars (King's Speech! And Colin Firth!!!) and didn't have time to post. I put my movies first:)

Red shoes. I love them.

Pluses: vibrant colors, and the motion really shows with the blurred background which is cool.

begins in delight

Rose had a divine idea. She and I took all the different sorts of chairs we had throughout our backyard and made a line through the emptiest, grassiest spot. Incidentally, also the spot with the most dog poop. Regardless, it was lovely and we took 400+ pictures.

Isn't it a nice little line? Some of the chairs are ancient. The black one on the end was my grandmother's, for her garden. It has a nice set to go with it. The one with the peeling paint has appeared here before. The one next to it, and the other brown one are from when I was little. Those three live in Rose's tree house. The white one with the rose was picked up on the side of the road because it has a rose on it (for Rose, of course). And the last one is my dad's favorite.

Pluses: bright, warm light, interesting angle and focus, bright colors.

Rosie. Aww, what a darling:)

the light of day

Oh hey, I didn't take it from my bed! Guess who isn't sick anymore?

Pluses: vibrant colors, interesting angle and focus, lovely sunlight hitting the tiny clovers.

I hadn't been outside in 2 days. For real. Like not even stuck my head out. Wow.

almost anything

Still sick.

Look, Simon. Aww.

Pluses: interesting light and colors. Remember, I'm still sick and took this on my Macbook.

On the plus side, I watched a string of really excellent movies today and yesterday. The African Queen, which was not as good as I'd hoped, Rear Window, which was fantastic, From Here to Eternity, which stank once Frank Sinatra died, The Philadelphia Story, delightful as always, Walk the Line, excellent, North by Northwest, which wasn't as good as Rear Window at all, and Casablanca. Quite honestly, after watching To Have and Have Not, it's rather difficult to watch anyone but Lauren Bacall with Humphrey Bogart, but it's still a lovely movie. Wittier than To Have and Have Not, and I do like Ingrid Bergman.
Well spent sick days, wouldn't you say? Better than school.

A lovely dapper gentleman reading in the second-hand bookstore. I would move to DC just for that little shop.

Pluses: warm light, interesting composition

Today:

Pluses: interesting composition. I'm tired, don't judge.

I had an fantastic time in Washington. In addition to wonderful people and general enjoyable touristy things, the service work we did for the homeless and terminally ill was really amazing and moving.

pourquoi

I must leave you for three days to go do supremely noble work in Washington, DC. As such, I generously post three photos to tide you over until I return. Aren't I just so built for this "giving of myself"?
Duh.

Pluses: Interesting angle, sharp contrast, colors and lines.

Pluses: bright colors, interesting pose and contrast.

I think this one is my favorite.

Pluses: interesting focus and composition, vibrant colors.

I shall return on Tuesday with my pockets full of pictures!

i know what love is

This one's from yesterday, but aren't they just so SWEET? Look at that tux. Off to the gala...

Photographic pluses: beautiful light, interesting angle

Okay, so I have a thought. Lily wrote about me the other day, and about how I only have positive things to say about my photos (in a complementary way, to be clear:). This is true. I would just like to mention why I feel comfortable with this, when it usually embarrasses me to say anything at all about myself and general redeeming qualities.
It's because with photography, all you do is press a button. I didn't make the beautiful light, I just saw it and captured it. Now, I'm still proud of it, and I still most certainly think photography is an art. It's just a different sort of art than drawing or painting. The end.

"I know what love is: Tracy and Hepburn, Bogart and Bacall, Romeo and Juliet..."
-Ian Shoales

May I just mention that I have a big thing for Katharine Hepburn and also Hollywood's general Golden Age and the 40s, etc. This quote makes me really happy... :)

each bird doth choose a mate

Kiss kiss. It's my very last one.

All gone.

Photographic pluses (2 in one, wowza): warm light, interesting contrast, lovely background (my geometry homework, teehee)

Must, bid the Morn awake!
Sad Winter now declines,
Each bird doth choose a mate;
This day's Saint Valentine's.
For that good bishop's sake
Get up and let us see
What beauty it shall be
That Fortune us assigns.

song of sunshine

Another photo binge....to make up for all the rubbish I've been posting lately.

This is Bella. I don't believe she has made an appearance yet, but here she is. She is on the Hmmm... page, actually.

Pluses: nice composition, lovely black-and-white-ness, interesting subject.

Pluses: Bright light, interesting composition

This is a little civil war church, right next to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which happens to be where I spent my afternoon. It is my favorite. The church, I mean, though I enjoy the museum as well. Isn't it a dear little thing?

Pluses: Vivid colors, nice light, good angle

Are those boots magnificent or what?

Pluses: Bright light, muted colors, interesting composition

when the sun is shining

OLLIE!
We are having work done on our house, and he HATES the contractors. Like, with a passion. He hides behind things. Sometimes they are things one would hide behind. Other times, like now, they are things like a chair leg that leave him completely and utterly exposed. Oh Ollie.

Photographic pluses: soft light, soft colors, nice angle

over your sad empty town

Rosie.
She's a ham too, just like Oliver. But she is beautiful, not fat. Though I suppose Ollie is beautiful in his own way. I think I would put him more in the cute category. Rose goes in the beautiful one. Sister love:)

Photographic pluses: soft light and colors, interesting composition. I should go more in-depth with these, shouldn't I? Ok: the colors are all bordering on neutral, with lots of blue. The light is bright and warm, but it's still soft and matches the colors. The way the door is in the picture, at an angle, and Rose's face is big and close are all nice. WOW, look at what I can say!

But I took your matches
Before fire could catch me
So don’t look now
I’m shining like fireworks
Over your sad empty town

yes you're lovely

This is Oliver. Remember? The ham.

Photographic pluses: interesting colors, bright, warm light (wow, really?) and a very cute, sleepy, fat cat.

just visit now and then

Two mediocres make a good, right? Maybe....

My hair. And it's favorite flower clip.

Photographic pluses: warm light, happy colors

Water bottle! Look at my porch, one day it will be done and it isn't just a hole in the ground anymore, it actually looks POSSIBLE.

Photographic pluses: interesting empty space, warm, bright light

you know you're licked before you begin

Photographic pluses: not many, I was rather hurried. Nice black and white-ness?

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.

I just discovered that the focus can be moved around on my fancy camera, and it is amazing! I am going crazy.

Photographic pluses: vibrant colors, interesting angle and focus.

harmony of thought and word and deed

Pansies in the window-box.

Photographic pluses: the colors are vibrant, and the reflection through the window is interesting

Friday, February 4, 2011

always hushed up

Photographic pluses: the details are sharp, the light soft and the colors vibrant

Thursday, February 3, 2011

i pray you know me when we meet again

Me again. I'm starting to feel rather self indulgent, but grass and old boxes edited up to look interesting are never quite as good as a real person. And everyone else is busy. Alas.

Photographic pluses: excellent contrast, warm light (big surprise), nice composition

love is to receive a glimpse

It looks like the gateway to heaven, doesn't it?

Photographic pluses: the light and colors are soft and the composition is interesting.

No school today since exams are over. I went on rather a photo binge, so I'm going to post all my favorites.

Endless grass. It holds an inexplicable appeal.

A lovely wall.

I named him Lionel.

Pretty benches.

Divinity.
I love pictures and warm sunniness and no school and being outside and days like today.
